Active Device Counting

This document explains how Simplified Solutions determines whether a device is considered active for billing purposes. Active device counting is designed to be fair, predictable, and aligned with how devices are enrolled and managed within an Organization.

Devices are evaluated daily, and activity is calculated using consistent rules to ensure billing accurately reflects usage.

What Qualifies as an Active Device

A device is considered active on a given day if it is enrolled in the Organization and has not been removed or fully deleted from the system.

A device does not need to be online or actively communicating at that moment to be considered active. Even if a device is temporarily offline or unable to report through the agent, it is still counted as active as long as it remains enrolled.

This approach prevents devices from unintentionally dropping in and out of billing due to brief connectivity issues or power outages.

Offline Devices

If a device is powered off, disconnected from the network, or otherwise unable to communicate with the management platform, it is still considered active.

Offline status affects visibility and health reporting but does not change whether the device is counted for billing.

Queued for Deletion

When a device is queued for deletion, it is still counted as active on the day the deletion request is submitted.

Starting the following day, the device is no longer included in active device counts, even though the background deletion process may still be running.

This ensures that billing reflects the exact day a device was removed from service, without requiring the full deletion process to complete first.

Daily Counting and Timezone

Active device counts are calculated on a daily basis using Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

All billing days begin and end at UTC boundaries, regardless of the Organization’s configured timezone. This ensures consistent and predictable billing calculations across all regions.

Subscription Tier Changes

If an Organization’s subscription tier changes during a billing day, devices are billed based on the highest subscription tier that applied to the Organization during that day.

For example, if an Organization upgrades its subscription partway through a day, devices for that day are billed at the upgraded tier. Similarly, if an Organization downgrades later in the day, billing for that day still reflects the higher tier.

This rule ensures that billing aligns with feature availability during each day and avoids partial or split-day calculations.

Why This Model Is Used

Active device counting is designed to be simple and transparent. By evaluating devices once per day using clear rules, the system avoids unexpected fluctuations and makes it easy to understand how charges are calculated.
