Installer Didn't Run

This document helps troubleshoot situations where an installer does not run or fails to start. In many cases, installer issues are related to using the wrong installer options for the device, but availability and readiness can also affect macOS flows.

Before retrying the installation, confirm that the installer generated in the wizard matches the target device and selected policy.

Confirm the Operating System

Installers are created for specific operating systems, such as Windows, macOS, or Linux. An installer designed for one operating system will not run on another.

Verify that the installer you downloaded matches the operating system installed on the device.

Verify Architecture and Linux Distribution (When Applicable)

On some platforms, especially Linux, installers are further specific to distribution type and system architecture.

For example, a Linux installer built for one distribution family may not run on another, and an installer compiled for a 64-bit system will not run on a different architecture.

If an installer fails to run or exits immediately, this is often a sign of an OS, distribution, architecture, or policy mismatch.

macOS MDM Readiness Check

On macOS, installer availability is policy-based and MDM-driven. If the required macOS policy source is not ready yet for your organization and selected role, generation or installation may not proceed as expected.

If you are prompted that macOS installer availability is pending, use the notification option and retry after readiness is confirmed.

Check File Permissions

Some installers, particularly on macOS and Linux, require execute permissions before they can run.

If opening the installer does nothing or produces a permission error, ensure the file has permission to execute and is being run using the appropriate method for the operating system.

Run as an Administrator

Installers typically need administrative privileges to install system-level components.

On Windows, make sure the installer is run as an administrator. On macOS or Linux, ensure installation is performed using an account with sufficient privileges.

Download a Fresh Installer

If the installer file was partially downloaded or corrupted, it may fail to run.

Return to the Simplified Solutions portal, regenerate or download the installer again, and retry installation using the newly downloaded file.

When to Generate or Replace an Installer

If the installer does not match the device’s operating system, policy, Linux distribution (if applicable), or architecture, generate a new installer with the correct options.

If the wizard indicates an existing installer already matches your selections, use that installer or choose replace if you need a fresh one.

If the Issue Persists

If the installer still does not run after verifying compatibility, readiness, and permissions, the issue may be related to system restrictions, security controls, or missing dependencies on the device.

At that point, review local system logs and contact support with device details (operating system, version, architecture, and selected installer options) to speed up diagnosis.
