Naming Best Practices
Choosing clear and consistent names makes it easier to manage Organizations, devices, and installers as your environment grows. This guide outlines simple naming best practices to help keep everything organized.
Names do not affect how the system functions, but good naming conventions make dashboards, reports, and lists easier to understand at a glance.
Organization Naming
Use Organization names that clearly identify the business, department, or environment being managed.
Common examples include a company name, a client name, or a combination of a name and environment.
- Company Name
- Company Name – Servers
- Client Name – Production
Avoid overly generic names that could become confusing if you manage multiple Organizations.
Device Naming
Devices are typically named based on the hostname of the system at the time the agent is installed.
If possible, use hostnames that include meaningful information, such as device role, location, or user.
- WS-JSMITH
- SRV-FILES-01
- LAPTOP-REMOTE-02
Consistent device naming makes it easier to identify issues and locate devices in the Dashboard.
Keep It Simple and Consistent
The most important rule is consistency. Choose a naming approach and apply it consistently across Organizations, devices, and installers.
Clear naming reduces mistakes, speeds up troubleshooting, and makes the system easier to manage as it scales.
